The Meaning of Life

I thought maybe I’d give you all some kind of ultra creative, subtly deep, and highly metaphorical title for this post, but NOPE, “The Meaning Of Life” sums things up quite nicely.

That’s right, I’ve solved the meaning of life, not on my own mind you, but with the help of one my coworkers who is as big a fan of critical thinking as I am.

Turns out you don’t have to be a genius to crack the secret behind the meaning of life, you just have to have a very active imagination and a very optimistic outlook on your own future.

So what’s the meaning of life? For what purpose do we all continue to live on this rotating rock in space? It’s very simple… Or maybe not so simple.

Let’s just say that you don’t believe in the idea of an intelligent Creator or that you were designed by said intelligent Creator.(if you do, that makes this whole explanation so much easier.. just saying) Instead, let’s say that you were the will of the Universe. That, in this current time period you were specifically meant to exist as opposed to any other time or place. That you were born into this era for a purpose so great, that every decision you make affects history as we know it. How is this possible you may ask?

Like I said it’s simple. You, me and everyone we know are all puzzle pieces.

How so?

Let’s look at the basic idea behind a puzzle. A puzzle is typically a preconceived(I wanted to go with “predesigned” but apparently that’s not a word..) picture that has been split into multiple fragments. Fragments that only when put together can make the picture whole again. Have you ever attempted or completed one of those thousand piece puzzles? Not only do they seem to take forever, but if you don’t get a piece right or a piece goes missing, the picture just seems incomplete, and all of a sudden, none of the seemingly insignificant pieces seem all that insignificant anymore.

That’s kind of like what we are, except on a much, MUCH, larger scale. We’re all part of a universal puzzle, and each of our lives are a crucial piece in the grand picture. Now we could get into the whole idea behind being a puzzle piece, like how big of a puzzle piece you may be, or where you fit when it comes to the whole puzzle, but see that’s the BEAUTY behind this thing called life, you get to keep figuring out how you fit in to the big picture until one day it becomes clear, that day of clarity being the day you fully fit in as your puzzle piece.

The other awesome thing about this theory, is that nobody really knows just how large this puzzle is, or where it ends. Maybe, it infinitely expands, and with every new life, another piece of the puzzle is added? Or maybe there is one huge final picture that none of us can ever possibly live long enough to see play out? It’s a lot of possibilities to consider but for now let’s just stay focused on the puzzle piece.

Lastly, don’t assume that, like a regular puzzle piece, you can only fit in one designated place. Whether you fit where you’re “supposed to fit” or fit somewhere else, the point is that you do fit in somewhere, but that somewhere is entirely decided by you. How important you are to the puzzle, how valuable you decide to make your piece is your choice, and at the end of your life your decisions will permanently place your piece down to influence other pieces around you.

So what do you think? Is that a plausible theory? Are you cool with being a puzzle piece? Is it a bad comparison? Do you think you’re something more? Something less? Let me know in the comments below…
